Joe Carter

Provisional Psychologist

Joe is a provisional psychologist who works with adults and adolescents. He enjoys helping people become confident in who they are and see themselves as capable of change. For Joe, therapy is a place to work things out together. He asks clients what they hope to achieve and what might help them move in that direction.

Joe’s areas of interest include:

  • Building self-esteem, confidence and connection with others
  • Developing more flexible responses to anxiety, rumination and perfectionism
  • Strengthening relationships
  • Understanding neurodivergence, including autism and ADHD
  • Adjusting to stress, burnout and major life changes

Joe draws mainly on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), bringing a thoughtful curiosity to each person’s underlying patterns and recognising the unique strengths they bring to therapy. He builds from what is already working and looks for ways to extend it. Joe takes a collaborative approach to therapy and is attentive to each client’s pace and way of communicating. He listens closely to how clients understand their experiences and responds calmly, offering considered observations that invite further reflection.

Before private practice, Joe worked in residential care and community youth services, supporting young people as they developed greater independence and a clearer sense of their own direction.

Outside his work in psychology, Joe has long enjoyed tennis and has spent time both playing and coaching. His other interests include gaming, films, travelling, spending time outdoors and enjoying downtime with his friends and family.
